These past 2 weeks have been incredibly busy...

Last week I had a Stats and Ochem Lab midterm, and this week I had a Pchem and Biochem midterm. At this point, I just hope I did relatively better than others on those tests. I'm so relieved I'm done with my first set of midterms. These last couple of weeks have been quite rough! I'm going to savor the joys of this stress free-don't have to study for a midterm-weekend. On a side note, I introduced my mom to the wonderful world of Skype. I'm going to bake my amazing chocolate chip cookie recipe that I discovered from an NY Times article on a Jacques Torres cookie recipe. I've made it before and it turned out amazing. Let's hope it'll be twice the amount of wonderful once I bake it again.

While studying for my metabolic biochem midterm, I found out they made another trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man.

There's so much Andrew Garfield in this trailer for me to handle! Love it!

I recently discovered this song that is currently on repeat on my iTunes. I found that my friend Vikki is also obsessed with this song and gave me a link to an excellent cover that I definitely approve of.

Gotye (ft. Kimbra) - Somebody I used to know
Cover by Michael Schulte & Max Giesinger
I looked through other covers that Michael Schulte have done and loved all of the ones I've heard so far! Vikki informed me that he was on the German "The Voice" show! He's quite a cute ging too!

Well...I must get back to studying...2 midterms on Tuesday! Yikes!

An Exhausting Week of School

I have midterms next week and the week after that. So many deadlines and so little time. I really wish my structural biochemistry professor that I had last quarter would email me sooner about the possibility of interning in his lab. I would preferably want to work in his lab than the PI that I contacted for this program. I just feel like I would learn more biochem techniques if I intern for my professor than work on computational work on influenza.  The pros about the program would be an opportunity of a lifetime to intern abroad (all expense paid). My time is stretched rather thinly with my horrid schedule. Reality is rather complicated for me to deal with right now. I really need a break! On another note, I bought a copy of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring a couple weeks ago with a much nicer cover. I've only managed to get to chapter 2 because my schedule has not allowed me much time for leisure reading, but I must say reading it now is a lot easier than my first attempt in grade school.

I've been more bored than usual at work. A lot of people may regard working somewhere so close to the ocean with awe and jealousy, but I feel rather indifferent to this opportunity. I'm definitely not a beach person nor could I find excitement in going to the beach. In a non-perverse way, I'd rather be staring at people while I'm bored waiting for some agar to melt. People watching sounds a lot more fun, especially making strange and outrageous stories about total strangers. Here are some photos I've been taking at work:

My view while waiting for the agar to melt.

Wandering around in the chem lab room.

This is how close my work is from the beach.

Films I'm Anticipating to see in 2012 (so far)

In no particular order, here are the following films I'm looking forwards to so far:

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

I know it's one of those stories that just feels like "been there, done that," but I truly believe there's always something magical about watching Peter Jackson's films that screams epic journeys that tests the trust between the brotherhood of comrades. Do watch the trailer. The scene where Bilbo says "I can't just go running off into the blue. I'm a Baggins of Baggin," it was so Martin Freeman like with his hilarious deadpan style of humor.

Moonrise Kingdom

Although, Wes Anderson films are always a hit or miss for me, I'm particular fond of this storyline and the way it's presented in the trailer. I might have never finished Darjeeling Limited, I did enjoy The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic of Steve Zissou, and Rushmore. The plot focusses on a boy that runaways from camp along with his lover, which then prompts the whole town to search for them. There was something that felt sort of French New Wave-esque about the scenes in the trailer, maybe it's the humor or just the Francoise Hardy song playing in the background. I'm really surprised that the Owen brothers were not part of this film, but I'm looking forward to seeing Edward Norton and Bruce Willis in it. If you plan to watch this film, be prepared for some deadpan quirky humor.

The Great Gatsby

I remember my junior year of high school we were required to read The Great Gatsby for AP Language, and I found it slightly interesting. Of course, the requirement of having to read a book always makes me enjoy it a bit less. From what I still remember about the book, there were themes about the disillusionment of the American dream, social decline, gender roles. Of course, anything with Carey Mulligan in it, I'm definitely going to watch. She's such a lovely actress with a wonderful voice that I just want her to do a voice reading of some Jane Austen book. I can hardly wait to see this film, I am definitely going to enjoy the wonderful clothes of the 1920s.

The Dark Knight Rises

Who isn't going to watch this?! Christopher Nolan has yet to fail me when it comes to directing and writing suspenseful thrillers. Thank god he revamped the Batman images within this decade after the shameful films directed by Joel Schumacher.

Prometheus

I haven't been much of a Ridley Scott fan, but I will check this out. I'm still not sure how the title relates to the Greek Myth but Michael Fassbender is in it, so it should be interesting.

Django Unchained

So the plot focusses on a freed slave that joins together with a German bounty hunter to seek revenge on his evil plantation owner. With Tarantino directly, loads of bloody violence is definitely going to be involved in this film. I'm pretty sure I'll find this film interesting, Tarantino always has his ways of captivating his audience with interconnected story lines that always ends in some twisted confrontation.

The Amazing Spider-Man

Andrew Garfield is in this. Enough said. I go mad like a fan girl whenever I see or hear his name. From what I get from the trailer, I'm definitely getting some sort of hipster-Spiderman vibe from this. Well, it wouldn't be that surprising seeing that the director did (500) Days of Summer. Definitely going to watch this!! I wonder if the film is going to stay true to the ending of Gwen Stacy and Spiderman.

Anna Karenina
Directed by Joe Wright. Although I haven't read the book yet, the synopsis does sound interesting. I'm pretty awful at getting into books about aristocratic socialites and their twisted romance life, but I will definitely be up to watch one in film. After looking at the cast list, it seriously looks like an epic British cast/Atonement pt 2. I was saddened to hear that Benedict Cumberbatch couldn't be part of the ensemble. The only person that troubles me so far about the cast was hearing Aaron Johnson was in it. His performance in Kickass has made me cringe to this day at any other film he's in.

I'll add more films later.

Sherlock

I wish I had more friends to discuss this marvelous show because yesterday's episode was just emotionally overwhelming. After discovering the modern adaptation of Sherlock created by the most clever of minds, Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat, I definitely can not watch the latest Sherlock films directed by Guy Ritchie. Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman have the superb chemistry on this show to the point where the relationship between Sherlock and Dr. Watson becomes questionable. Last night's episode of Reichenbach Falls seriously left me on the edge of my seat in almost every scene. Spoiler Alert: We're all pretty sure Molly and St. Bart's hospital were involved in faking Sherlock's death. I'm still not sure if Moriarty really killed himself. Darn Moffat and his cliffhangers! It's Doctor Who all over again!
Now time to wait again for the next series....it's going to be a long and painful year to wait for the return of Sherlock. Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch deserve BAFTAs for this show!!
